These Boulders in Sardinia Are Otherworldly

Niky Ceria opens some unique, aesthetic problems in a beautiful Mediterranean setting

When most climbers think of Sardinia, they think of a sport climbing paradise. The Italian island, however, also hosts some amazing trad climbs, multi-pitches, and boulders as well. A new short-film was just released by Flathold detailing Italian boulderer Niky Ceria establishing and climbing some stunning Sardinian blocs.

“The new short movie about Sardinia attempts to relate my approach to this region; an unique area which differs from any other place I have been at under many circumstances: rock type, conditions, setting, approaches, landscapes and logistics,” said Ceria on Instagram.
”Developing these lines was one of my ultimate challenges and, perhaps, one of the most intensive and stressful processes I went through in my career.

“Everything was made more arduous by the fact that finding company to walk these paths isn’t easy. And every time I begin to think about a possible line on these rocks I immediately understand the reasons of my solitude.

The amount of work behind this movie was huge and I can only speak climbing wise.
These visions are the outcomes of days of visualization, pushing my climbing imagination to an area I have rarely visited. Reaching this zone was only possible through the mesmerizing focus that you get in exploring these tight gullies for hours, days and weeks without being defeated by the many harsh setbacks such as heavy loads, exhausting hikes, aggressive rock, never-ending condense and tricky conditions.
I don’t have the ability to tell how tricky it was following me on this journey with the camera and having an editorial view on the whole thing.”

Ceria is well-known for his aesthetics-forward approach to establishing new lines. He discovers problem that are not only intrinsically beautiful, but also feature incredibly difficult moves. He has climbed multiple V16s including Off the Wagon Low, La Révolutionnaire Assis, Gioia, and Ephyra, among others.
