Two Himalayan Climbers Die in Avalanche

The bodies of two Sherpa guides have been found in a crevasse on Annapurna

Two climbers, Rima Sherpa and Ngima Tashi Sherpa, have died in an avalanche on Annapurna. Their bodies were located using Recco reflector technology.

Rima and Ngima were above camp two when the avalanche slid and carried them into a crevasse. Expedition leader Chhang Dawa Sherpa used the Recco device in the avalanche debris and located the missing climbers. Most Sherpa guides wear clothing with Recco tech – learn more about it here.

Nearly 80 climbers have died on Annapurna over the decades, with 20 of them being Nepalese guides, including Rima and Ngima. Nepal issued 66 permits for Annapurna this season, which is the most on record – it should be noted that only foreign climbers need permits.

Dawa Sherpa posted a video of the avalanche that claimed the lives of Rima and Ngima, writing, “We deployed a Helicopter to locate them as soon as we heard the news and Captain Sobit Gauchan flew until evening to find Ngima and Rima. No luck still. The route between Annapurna Camp 2 and Camp 3 is hugely disrupted by this avalanche. We’ll do our best to fix the line by tomorrow.”
