Two Rock Climbers Die in Utah Canyon
In less than two weeks, two rock climbers have died after sustaining injuries while on routes in Big Cottonwood Canyon
Over the past few weeks, two rock climbers have died after sustaining injuries in Utah’s Big Cottonwood Canyon. The most recent death came after an unnamed 26-year-old man fell around 30 metres down Outside Corner on Wednesday afternoon.
Police said that they were roped in and had the “proper safety” equipment for the climb. He was reportedly deceased when first responders arrived at the scene. Unified Police requested assistance from Salt Lake County Search and Rescue as well as a helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety.
No other details have been released at this time and the reason behind why he fell is not immediately known. Outside Corner is a classic three-pitch trad climb first climbed in the 1950s that gets a grade of 5.7, however many climbers suggest that it’s as hard as 5.9 in sections.
Less than two weeks ago, a 34-year-old climber named Kaitlyn Brann died from rockfall while climbing in Big Cottonwood Canyon. She was on Goodro’s Wall, one of the first 5.10s in America, when the accident took place. Our condolences to the family and friends of those involved in these accidents.
