Watch Trailer for Highly Anticipated New Film ‘Namuli’

In celebration of International Mountain Day, Ukalene Productions released the official film trailer: Namuli.

The community-backed film documents the spirit of exploration and what happens when a team of rock climbers, biologists, and conservationists sets off on an unconventional expedition into one of the world’s least explored and most threatened habitats. The film follows an international crew as they push the bounds of friendship, climbing, and scientific research on the 2,000-foot granite face of Mozambique’s second highest mountain, Mount Namuli.

“The goal of the project was to create cliffside access for our scientists and facilitate an integrated conservation study of one of the world’s most bio-diverse habitats,” said Majka Burhardt, director of Namuli and founder of LEGADO, a now-ongoing conservation venture sparked by the Mozambique expedition. “In the process, we established the first-ever technical climbing route on Mount Namuli and catalyzed a new conservation initiative with the communities surrounding the region.”

Namuli explores connections between people and landscape, focused on a remote region of mountains spanning the border between Mozambique and Malawi, in southeastern Africa. These isolated mountains, called inselbergs, serve as island ecosystems, each harboring extraordinary biodiversity and unique life.

Like mountains around the world, these ecosystems also provide critical natural and cultural resources for nearby human communities. During the Namuli expedition, scientists explored new habitats otherwise unattainable and the access that the project facilitated allowed for the discovery of a new snake species, the southernmost recording of a caecilian in the world, and the first ever collection of rare insects on the massif.

Namuli features expedition leader, Majka Burhardt, a professional climber, author, and social entrepreneur. The film also follows rofessional climber Kate Rutherford, Brazilian entomologist Flavia Esteves, South African entomologist Caswell Munyai, and Mozambican herpetologist Harith Farooq. Namuli is directed and produced by Majka Burhardt, Sarah Garlick, and Paul Yoo.

The Broader Impact of Namuli: LEGADO

LEGADO is a global venture to link uncommon collaborations, leadership training, and community development to foster a future where people and ecosystems thrive together. LEGADO’s work on Mount Namuli is to create targeted and measurable conservation and human livelihood gains, with a vision to scale their approach to other mountain regions and communities around the world. The Namuli film documents the LEGADO team’s pioneering 2014 expedition on Mount Namuli.
