Wildfire Closes Rock Climbing Areas

Climb Nova Scotia is urging climbers to avoid cragging for the time being

Officials in Nova Scotia have closed all backcountry wooded areas due to out of control wildfires across the province. The fine for breaking the fire ban is $25,000, and the fine for entering a wooded area is $237.50.

Many of the climbing areas in Nova Scotia are in wooded areas, which has led to Climb Nova Scotia releasing a message, stating, “As you all have heard by now, access to woodland areas in Nova Scotia has been restricted. This applies to public and private land and means that climbing plans in all areas of the province will have to be postponed until the ban is lifted. Sending love to all in the community right now, especially those impacted by the wildfires.”

David Steeves of the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources said today: “This is a very dangerous situation. It’s changing every moment with wind, with fuels, with the lay of the land, how the sun is heating the fuels. Everything is constantly evolving, so we have to take the safest route for the citizens we are here to serve.”

Climb Nova Scotia urges climbers to avoid all outdoor crags as emergency services are stretched to their limits. To see where the smoke from wildfires in North America is headed visit here.
