Winter Olympics to Return to the U.S.A.

The UIAA has been working for years to have ice climbing as a sport at the Olympics

The International Olympic Committee announced that 2034 Winter Olympics will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah, the city which hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics.

“Enthusiasm for the Games was always our feeling, on the first minute to the last minute, in every interaction we had, both at the venues and in our meetings with athletes, sports leaders, politicians and the private sector,” said Karl Stoss, the International Olympic Committee’s Future Host Commission’s chairperson.

According to the Associated Press, other places have declined to host the Winter Olympics over budgetary concerns and climate change. Salt Lake City has all 13 of its necessary venues in place and said that there’s already housing for the athletes.

As to whether ice climbing will be a featured sport, the UIAA has released in a statement: “The Winter Olympics in 2030 are likely to be hosted in France – so ahead of the confirmation of 2030 host venue by the IOC in July, the UIAA has been working with the French National Federation FFCAM to lay some important ground work with the objective of lobbying the French Organising Committee if and when that announcement is made in the summer. The UIAA also met with the IOC recently to discuss all the developments that have happened in the last year and to lay plans for the future.”
