Yosemite’s Famous Camp 4 is About to Get Very Busy

A backcountry campground has been closed for an unknown reason and the park is moving hikers to Camp 4

Yosemite National Park is relocating backpackers to Camp 4 starting April 25, after announcing the park is closing a popular backcountry camping spot.

“Space is limited and backpackers are encouraged to have alternate lodging options,” the National Park Service wrote. Officials have not provided a reason for the closure or how long it will last. Space will be limited to just 36 people, down from around 100.

Hikers on the John Muir Trail and Pacific Coast Trail will be impacted, as the camping area is a crucial stopover. Backcountry users are worried this could impact backcountry safety. The guiding service Lasting Adventures wrote: “This change could lead to overcrowding, unsafe behavior, and more strain on Yosemite’s wild spaces.”

Camp 4 is one of the most famous campgrounds in the world for rock climbers, as many of the most influential climbers have stayed there over the past 70 years. More on Camp 4 in the below videos.
