100 Greatest Peaks of New Zealand and the American Trying to Climb Them
Only one climbers has climbed these 100 peaks and nobody has done them all in one year

American climber Nathan Longhurst is hoping to climb 100 of the most famous mountains in New Zealand within one calendar year, and he’s nearly complete. He’s not the only climber attempting the 100 peaks, there’s even a website here with 95 climbers enrolled.
Starting last fall, the 25-year-old has now climbed nearly 80 summits, which sets him up to complete his goal before the peak-bagging season ends. To date, only one climber, Don French, has successfully climbed all 100 peaks.
The difficulty of the peaks range from mellow scrambles to technical alpine routes where climbers must rope up. Longhurst isn’t just climbing the 100 mountains, but he’s trying to paraglide off from the tops. By flying down, he’s able to sometimes link several peaks in a day.
Back home in the U.S.A., Longhurst became the youngest climber to ascent the Bulger’s List – 247 mountains in the state of Washington – which he climbed in only 138 days. See below for the 100 greatest peaks of New Zealand.
