This 1979 Ice Climbing Film Shows Old Techniques

Ice climbing techniques have advanced a lot over the years. There are a number of reasons, but modern equipment is one of the main ones. Old screws were difficult to place and tools had straight shafts. “I made this movie more than 30 years ago with my friends Paul Hara, Gary Clark and Dave Ohst,” said the film’s produce Kim Grandfield.

“Actually, Paul was the key guy since he had more film and film editing experience. Gary, Dave and I provided the climbing experience and I did the narration. Paul entered the film in many film festivals and won several hundred dollars in prize money (a lot for 1979). If you watch this video you will want to notice some of the gear as times have changed immensely. In particular, check out the wool knickers, wool gloves and some of the ice climbing gear. Some of the items like the Chouinard North Wall Hammer with a bamboo handle are collector’s items by now.”
