Another Climber Joins the 5.15c Club

Jorge Díaz-Rullo has made the first ascent of Mejorando la Samfaina, grading it 5.15c

Jorge Díaz-Rullo has made the first ascent of his Margalef project Mejorando la Samfaina, grading it 5.15c (9b+). Diz-Rullo’s new route is a link-up of Mejorando Imagen 5.15a/b and Samfaina 5.15a.

With this ascent, Díaz-Rullo is the first Spanish climber and eighth climber ever to send 5.15c. The last climber to join the 5.15c club was Sean Bailey with his repeat of Bibliographie in September 2021.

While Mejorando la Samfaina is Díaz-Rullo’s first 5.15c, the 24-year-old has sent many 5.15bs in the past, including El Bon Combat and First Round First Minute – both Chris Sharma first ascents in Catalunya. According to Díaz-Rullo’s 8a.nu, he has redpointed two 5.15a/bs and seven 5.15bs, all of which were in Spain. He’s also climbed 17 5.15as and 31 5.14ds. In addition to these hard redpoints, he’s onsighted at least 30 routes between 5.13d and 5.14d and bouldered up to V15.

Although the grade still needs confirmation, with this latest ascent, Diaz-Rullo joins an elite group of climbers that have climbed 5.15c – Adam Ondra, Stefano Ghisolfi, Seb Bouin, Alex Megos, Chris Sharma, Jakob Shubert, and Sean Bailey.

And Mejorando la Samfaina joins a growing list of 5.15c routes around the world, including Ghisolfi’s new 5.15c that he sent last week: Change (FA: Ondra), La Dura Dura (FA: Ondra), Vasil Vasil (FA: Ondra), Perfecto Mundo (FA: Megos), Bibliographie (FA: Megos), Suprême Jumbo Love (FA: Bouin), Zvěřinec (FA: Ondra), Excalibur (FA: Ghisolfi), Mejorando la Samfaina (FA: Díaz-Rullo).

It’s important to note that there are several 5.15b/c routes in existence such as Ondra’s Move and Bouin’s Beyond Integral and Nordic Marathon. The hardest routes in the world are graded 5.15d: Ondra’s Silence and Bouin’s DNA. For a list of the hardest routes in the world visit here.
