Chaehyun Seo Onsights a 5.14b in Spain

On the last day of her Oliana trip, she onsighted the classic Fish Eye 5.14b

South Korean climber Chaehyun Seo just finished up a trip to Oliana, Spain. Her main project of the trip was Papichulo 5.15a (9a+), which she left unfinished, but she managed some other big sends during her visit. Earlier this month she clipped the chains on Open Your Mind Direct L1 5.14d (9a). On the last day of her trip, she onsighted the ultra-popular Fish Eye 5.14b (8c).

Fish Eye is Seo’s second 5.14b onsight to date. Her first onsight of the grade came in November 2022, when she climbed L’Antagonista in Spain on her first attempt. With the ascent, she became the second woman in history to onsight 5.14b, the first being Janja Garnbret. Her hardest redpoint to date is La Rambla 5.15a.

“When we hiked up to the wall, it was so foggy that we could not see anything above us,” said Seo about the day of her Fish Eye send. “We thought about just giving up climbing and back home, but we couldn’t go down because it was our last day. While waiting for my main project to get dry, I just tried [Fish Eye 5.14b] for fun, but I made it on my onsight try, and was my second [5.14b] onsight. Although I couldn’t send Papichulo this time, but I’ll definitely come back here.”

Fish Eye has seen a few onsights over the years, including from Stefano Ghisolfi in 2017 and Janja Garnbret in 2021, among others. Magnus Midtbø and Jonathan Siegrist flashed it. Most of sport climbing’s biggest names have redpointed the route, including Adam Ondra, Dani Andrada, Dave Graham, Daila Odeja, Jessica Pilz, Hazel Findlay, Joe Kinder, Jorge Diaz-Rullo, and Laura Rogora, among many, many others.
