In 2024, 787 people summited Everest from Nepal, and 74 climbers summited from Tibet. In total, 7,269 climbers have been recorded summiting Everest for a total of 12,884 summits. Sadly, 335 people have died attempting Everest.

Other Everest news this year: There’s a new road in Nepal that connects the Everest region to Kathmandu, which offers an alternative to the once-essential flight to Lukla, marking a much-needed shift in accessibility to the world’s highest peak. The 64-kilometre road goes from the village of Surkhe to Salleri, not far from Everest. “The road will make our lives easier,” said Jangmu Sherpa, the owner of a lodge on the route to Everest.

Nepal has announced that a permit to climb the world’s tallest peak will cost more this year than last year. In September, the cost goes up to $15,000, a 36 per cent rise over the $11,000 fee that had been in place for the past 10 years.

And several Sherpa, known as the Icefall Doctors, are currently working to open a route from base camp, at 5,400 metres, to the Western CWM at 6,000 metres. From March 1 to the end of May is considered pre-monsoon season in the Himalaya, and it’s the busiest time of year on the world’s highest mountains.
