Ice Climbers Should Use This Avalanche App

The Avalanche Canada app includes important information about current conditions and forecasts

Many of Canada’s most popular ice climbs are located in avalanche-prone areas. Ice climbers should take every step necessary to be as safe as possible when heading into avalanche area, from bringing avalanche gear (beacon, probe, shovel) to checking avalanche conditions and forecasts before heading in.

There are a few avalanche conditions apps available for smartphones, with the newest by Avalanche Canada being a must-have. It’s available for all smartphone types and is free to download, just search Avalanche Canada and it should pop up. The older and more widely used Avalanche Forecast app includes areas in the U.S.A., which the Avalanche Canada one does not, but the Avalanche Canada one includes more in-depth reports. Simply go to the explore screen and scroll through recent Mountain Information Network posts, Mountain Conditions Reports and more.

Features from the Avalanche Canada app include: Easy access to the daily avalanche forecasts, avalanche advisories, observations from other users, and remote weather station data; get the daily avalanche forecast for your region, direct to your mobile device; get hourly weather data from over 80 remote weather stations; access to all submissions posted on our Mountain Information Network; submit your own avalanche, weather, and snowpack observations quickly and easily to the Mountain Information Network.

Be sure to download the Avalanche Canada app before heading into avalanche country in Canada’s mountains. If you’re in the U.S.A. then download the Avalanche Forecast app. And if you’ve never taken an avalanche course then consider taking one before going into avalanche country.
