John Bolte Sends The Bachar/Yerian 5.11cR/X

The Bachar/Yerian is a four-pitch 5.11cX on Medlicott Dome in Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite.

It was first climbed by John Bachar and Dave Yerian in 1981 and has become a test-piece route with big run-outs that have resulted in bad injuries.

John Bolte of California is the only climber on record to have sent the serious line this year.

The first pitch goes 5.11cX and climbs up a ramp to knobs to the base of a black streak. From there, you clip a bolt and do a V4 boulder problem to get above the bulge and into a flake and slab.

The second 5.11a pitch has three bolts in 40 metres of climbing and is considered one of the best pitches at the grade.

The next two pitches go at 5.10d and 5.9 and have more serious route finding and climbing. Watch the late Hayden Kennedy climb the run-out route here.

Some other climbers who’ve sent: Scott Cosgrove, Jerry Moffat, Wolfgang Gullich, Will Stanhope, Alex Honnold, Hazel Findlay, Emily Harrington, Chris Leary, Scott Burke, Hayden Kennedy, Lonnie Kauk and Alan Carne.
