Jon Cardwell Climbing the Iconic Biographie 5.15a
A new short film was just dropped featuring the American sending the route nearly a decade ago
Back in 2016, American climber Jon Cardwell sent Biographie, arguably the world’s most famous 5.15a sport climb. Situated on the stunning limestone walls of Céüse, France, this “king line” was first freed in 2001 by Chris Sharma after three years of effort. The route was originally bolted by French alpinist Jean-Christophe Lafaille. Its lower section, up to the midway rest, was first climbed by Arnaud Petit in 1996 at 5.14c. Five years later, Sharma linked the remaining 20 meters—an unrelenting stretch of pumpy climbing capped by a brutal boulder crux, setting a new benchmark for difficulty at the dawn of the millennium.
Cardwell first tried the route back in 2007, during his inaugural trip to Europe, the same season fellow Americans Dave Graham and Ethan Pringle managed their own redpoints. But he quickly realised the 60-move testpiece was beyond his reach at the time. In 2008, he achieved his first 5.14d with KinematiX at Les Gorges du Loup, and in 2009 he launched his first serious campaign on Biographie, though without success.
And then after roughly 75 attempts, Cardwell finally clipped the anchors. His ascent is a testament to pure determination, perseverance, and patience. Reflecting afterward, he said: “It feels great to finally finish this project after years of effort, regardless of the grade. The best thing we can take away from these climbs are the lessons they teach us and the incredible places they bring us—places we owe our respect.”
Known to Americans as Realization, the name originally suggested by Sharma, Biographie has long captured the imagination of the world’s strongest climbers.
