Metolius Hardtop, a Light, Affordable, Durable Helmet

This is one of our favourite new helmets going into summer 2025

The Metolius Hardtop helmet strikes a balance between weight, durability, and affordability, making it a great choice for climbers of all levels. Designed with a two-piece construction, it combines a full Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) foam core with a hard ABS shell. This hybrid approach offers both impact absorption and resilience, ensuring protection against both direct and repeated impacts. The ABS shell adds an extra layer of durability, making the helmet resistant to abrasions and minor rockfalls, while the EPP foam helps to dissipate impact forces efficiently.

Ventilation is a key factor in helmet comfort, and the Hardtop does not disappoint. Large ventilation holes provide excellent airflow, keeping climbers cool even during high-output climbings. The ultralight webbing harness ensures a snug but comfortable fit without unnecessary bulk. Additionally, the helmet includes removable and washable fit pads, allowing users to customize their comfort and maintain hygiene over time. These features make the Hardtop practical for long climbing days in varying conditions.

For added functionality, Metolius has equipped the Hardtop with two front headlamp clips and a rear elastic strap. These make it easy to secure a headlamp for early morning starts or late descents. The helmet is available in two sizes, S/M and M/L, accommodating a range of head circumferences from 20.5 to 24 inches (52-61 cm). This range ensures that climbers can find a secure fit without compromising comfort.

Weighing in at approximately 8.8 ounces (250 grams) for the smaller size and 9.5 ounces (270 grams) for the larger one, the Hardtop is impressively lightweight. A lighter helmet reduces strain on the neck and enhances comfort during long climbing days. Despite its low weight, it meets CE and EN 12492:2012 safety standards, ensuring it provides reliable protection for all types of climbing, from sport routes to alpine ascents.

The Metolius Hardtop fits well within modern trends in helmet design, where lightweight materials and multi-impact protection are becoming the standard. More helmets today incorporate EPP foam due to its ability to handle multiple impacts without losing structural integrity. Similarly, the increasing focus on ventilation and fit adjustments reflects broader industry improvements aimed at making helmets more comfortable without sacrificing safety.

Overall, the Metolius Hardtop is a thoughtfully designed helmet that meets the needs of climbers looking for a combination of protection, comfort, and practical features. Its durable construction, effective ventilation, and lightweight feel make it a strong contender in the climbing helmet market. Whether you’re a sport climber, trad climber, or mountaineer, the Hardtop offers a reliable and comfortable option for protecting your head in the vertical world.
