Miguel’s Pizza, Red River Gorge Landmark, Turns 40
If you're in the area this weekend, be sure to swing by for a free slice and some live music
If you’ve been to Red River Gorge then the chances are high that you’ve been to Miguel’s Pizza and climbing shop. Since the early 1980s, it’s been a landmark next to one of the world’s most famous sandstone sport climbing areas. Miguel’s turns 40 this year.
The shop was opened by Miguel Ventura and it quickly became a gathering place for climbers and non-climbers alike. It’s where you can run into old friends or refuel after a long day of rock climbing. It’s a unique location with a lot of history.
Read a story about what climbing in the Red River Gorge was like in the early 1990s here. “Saying that The Gorge was a different place back then is an understatement,” wrote Gus Alexandropoulos. “There were no cabin rentals, Miguel’s parking lot could accommodate about 10 cars, and eating and dining options were significantly more limited.”
To celebrate their 40th anniversary, Miguel’s will be throwing a party this weekend. If you’re in the area then be sure to swing by. There will be free slices of pizza and music and the unveiling of a new water filtration system and fountain that will give climbers access to clean spring water. There will be live music by Widely Grown. The party starts at 6 p.m.
