Patagonia’s R1 Turns 20 and Has Fresh New Look

Even after 20 years, Patagonia’s iconic R1 midlayer remains a benchmark for alpine efficiency. For the 20th anniversary of one of our favorite products, Patagonia is celebrating the amazing adventures (and mishaps) that have all been done in R1.

From first ascents such as Tommy Caldwell on the Dawn Wall, to wild adventures including Luke Nelson completing his first 100 mile race in 2010, these stories show the versatility, history and dedication to a product that was near-perfect 20 years ago and has only improved in the years since.

This season, Patagonia has updated the exclusive Power Grid fabric to be 93 per cent recycled and we’ve added two new styles to the R1 line up. Check out the funny new video to promote the anniversary below.

Men’s R1 Pullover Hoody

After 20 years of cranking, the R1® fabric remains a benchmark for alpine efficiency—and this season Patagonia’s refocused the Pullover Hoody for the technical core user. Its high/low grid interior (Polartec® Power Grid® polyester) is key to the hoody’s versatility—it’s the lightest and most breathable iteration ever, and still exclusive to Patagonia.

Men’s and Women’s R1 Full-Zip Hoody

Perfect for any cool-weather adventure the R1 Full-Zip Hoody’s exclusive Polartec® Power Grid® fabric traps heat while remaining highly breathable and lightweight, and has outstanding stretch and durability.

Women’s R1 Crew

A newly requested style from ambassadors and customers, the new R1 crew has a technical fit that accommodates light underlayers or works as a stand-alone top, and it squashes down to practically nothing in your pack. The low-profile crewneck creates minimal bulk when layering, raglan sleeves provide mobility and comfort under pack straps, and the hem slit and drop tail stay tucked into harness.
