Top Climbers and Photographers at Squamish Exposed 2019

Apply to climb with a strong photographer/climber team this August

Squamish Exposed is taking place this August as part of the Arc’teryx Climbing Academy and a number of international climbers and photographers will be there. If you apply by June 30, you can team up with one of the photo/athlete combinations for a few days of pro photography on the wall.

The climbers who’ll be part of the event are Luka Lindic, Nina Caprez, Leslie Timms, Quentin Roberts, Em Pellerin and Jordan Cannon. And the photographers are Tara Kerzhner, Joe Segreti, Ted Hesser, Pete Hoang, Irene Yee and Cam Mair. It will take place from Aug. 19 to Aug. 23.

What an amazing weekend! I would really love to thank Arc’teryx, especially Justin Sweeny and Tom Wright, for all their hard work, creativity, and encouragement in organizing a most unique first-ever Photo Showdown for the Arcteryx Climbing Academy 2017. This contest paired six pro climbing photographers with six Arcteryx pro climbing athletes, and six “wild card” applicants to be teamed up for 48 hours of manic shooting, climbing, and generally getting totally worked and stressed (but having a blast) to come up with a three-minute slideshow this past Saturday evening in Squamish. As of Thursday morning the photographers had no idea which athlete, or which wild card applicant, we would be working with. I tell ya this was NOT easy – and it was pouring rain. Thank Dog I got paired with the ultra-stoked workhorse and sending boss, Mr. Jesse Huey, and the lovely, hardworking Elisha Gallegos from Oklahoma. Both were super inspired to do anything, go anywhere, and they crushed it. We connected well, thanks so much! I also feel that all six photographers worked equally hard and everyone’s show was awesome. It was really anyone’s game, and in the end what matters most was that we all shot a ton of fun photos in an insanely tight period of time, and had a hoot watching all the shows roll together. Congratulations to John Price for knocking out first place, Kieren Brownie for stealing second, and I’ll happily pat myself on the back for sliding into third base! This was a stellar weekend event I won’t soon forget. Dear 2018, thanks for making my life full of happenings, and not full of things! Also for LOTS of caring and inspiring people, for sooo much climbing, extended summer through trips down south, for hugs, for many hours in the car en route to big and little adventures (and so many podcasts) and all the days outside, & some beautiful hikes in the mountains, and flights to the other side of the world to see familiar faces, and you know what? thanks for those silly injuries too, because they teach me patience and remind me how to take care of myself better (and how to be less clumsy), & thanks for new responsibilities, the doors opened and the doors closed, for 6 wheels to get me places, and for teaching me that if you write down your goals on a piece of paper and pin it above your bed, some magic can happen. 2019, I’m coming with my pieces of paper.

Rosie the Riveter said “we can do it” to ask women to rise up, and prove to men that we can do whatever men can do. She encouraged women to “not be afraid to be themselves” while fighting for women’s rights during the 1940’s. Rosie was described as masculine, she wore men's clothes and did a mans job, however she wore lipstick to represent her feminine side. This photo of @heather_lightfoot on Split Beaver (5.10b) was inspired by Rosie the Riveter to show our appreciation for the strong, beautiful, non fictional women who are spreading the mantra that "we CAN do. it". ————————————————————— Last week I was in Squamish taking part in the #squamishexposed event. I was paired up with two climbers and given 48 hours to shoot photos, one day to edit hand in a slide show and present to a crowed. All smiles on top of Squamish, but getting up this pitch involved blood, swearing and trying as hard as I possibly could when it seemed like it wasn’t gonna work. In short, it was meaningful enough to drag all the good and bad out of me, and that sense of meaning and total commitment to the experience at hand is at least half of why I climb. The other half is about the people and places I get to experience, and the beautifully mad people who make up the climbing community. This picture is a quick iPhone shot, can’t wait to see the goods from all the teams from the shoot! Taken yesterday after two very full days of chasing perfect rock around Squamish with @christieimages and the indestructible @alyssiajebb for the #squamishexposed photo challenge. We climbed a lot of wild routes, had some good laughs and tried as hard as we could. I’m really stoked to see the pics and have the memories. I spent a summer of stone and sun here in Squamish more than 30 years ago, and also swore, bled, and lived the dreams written on these rocks with chalk, blood and stoke. I hope everyone gets the opportunity to live their dreams with full commitment, it’s a glorious gift in life #smithoptics #chromapop
