Watch Five Rock Climbing Whippers

Your weekly dose of edge-of-your-seat whipper action

You can go your entire rock climbing life without taking a whipper if you’re careful enough, but more times than not you’ll run into a crux where falling is inevitable.

Below are five rock climbing whippers that luckily didn’t end too badly, plus two ice climb know-downs. Follow Whipper on Instagram for more big falls.

Whipper #1

Top trad climber Matteo Della Bordella takes a whipper on the classic Zombie Roof 5.13 at The Smoke Bluffs.

Whipper #2

Rita Young Shin goes for an awkward whipper that could’ve been worse without a helmet on.

Whipper #3

This climber goes for a ride and nearly decks head first. A close call and reminder to always wear a helmet.

Whipper #4

You can even take mini-whippers on top-rope. This ice climber was lucky their umbilcal leash didn’t ping the tool off their face.

Whipper #5

A few years ago, Squamish 5.14 trad climber Stu Smith goes for a ride while projecting a difficult route.

Ice Climb Down #1

From the protection of a bolted mixed section, this climber sends an ice pillar to the ground.

Ice Climb Down #2

A climber on the Stanley Headwall this week in the Canadian Rockies kicked this dagger off his objective. Ice!
