New Long Ice Moderates in Sumallo Cirque in B.C.

The new WI3 routes add to a collection of classic low-angle ice lines

Last weekend, Nathan Spowage and Artem Bylinskii climbed two new long routes in the Sumallo Cirque in B.C. “Without a set plan,” said Bylinskii, “we just looked around and got on the most iced up seeming line. We climbed surprisingly great ice for about 350 meters until it turned it a snow wallow.

“Opting for more ice, we rapped down and sauntered over to the next line on the right, and climbed 200 more meters of continuous ice.” The two new routes they climbed are Look-See-Do, a 350-metre WI3, and Chased by Darkness, a 200-metre WI3. There are still long moderate ice routes out there to get first ascents of.

Sumallo Cirque has a number of great alpine and ice routes, including The Silvertip/Rideout Gully, Minus Five gully (north couloir of Rideout), Zero Gully, Minus One (Edwards/Campbell) and The Plus One Gully. For more on west coast ice climbing join the Facebook group here.
