New White Tiger Route is Old Fred Beckey Project

In June of 2016, Aaron Hanson and Vince Ryglis spent three days approaching the Leaning Towers in the Purcells, a remote group of granite walls.

They made the journey to complete a 1986 project attempted by Fred Beckey, Jim Rusch and Carl Dietrich.

After their first ascent, Hanson and team called their line The White Tiger VI 5.11 A3. They found old bolts and webbing on the first few pitches and found no sign of travel after.

The rock quality improved higher on the wall and they climbed the new big wall route in 10 pitches. They bolted a few extra anchors but added no fixed protection between.

The trip was sponsored by the American Alpine Club Live Your Dream Grant. For the full trip report see here.

A film about Fred Beckey is currently touring film festivals and will show at the Banff Mountain Film Fest this fall.
