Space Force is New 11-Pitch 5.13 in Switzerland
It's the second big test-piece route the duo has added to the area
Alexandra Schweikart and Christopher Igel have made the first ascent of Space Force, an 11-pitch 5.13c in Valle Bavona, Ticino, Switzerland. In September 2014, the two made the first ascent of Della Funivia, a 300-metre 5.12 in the same valley.
They took two years to establish the difficult mixed bolts/trad route ground-up; and the first ascent took 11 hours. The pitches go: 5.13a, 5.10d, 5.13b, 5.11d, 5.13c, 5.12d, 5.10d, 5.12a and 5.10d. Pitch three has a splitter roof crack that goes at 5.13b, of which Schweikart said, “What a beauty. It takes green DMM Dragon Cams almost all the way.”
