Adam Ondra, Crack Climber?
Ondra visited the Wide Boyz for some crack training in the Cellar and onsight attempts on the Grit
In early 2023, Adam Ondra travelled to the U.K. to train and climb cracks with the Wide Boyz duo, Pete Whittaker and Tom Randall. Two videos were just released – one from the Wide Boyz and one from Ondra – detailing Ondra’s visit.
The pair invited Ondra to train at Randall’s famous crack training cellar, a dingy basement housing a series of roof crack problems and circuits that move through various sizes. Ondra tried his hand at all of their famous crack boulder problems, including their Century Crack offwidth simulator and a mono finger-lock roof problem that was built to roughly resemble the movement of the crux of Ondra’s Silence 5.15c.
The three also visit the Peak District, where Ondra attempts an onsight on Ray’s Roof E7 6c. First ascended by Ray Jardine in 1977, the route has yet to see a successful onsight. The climb is one of the hardest offwidths in the country and features some burly, uncomfortable climbing.
