The Film ‘Precious Leader Woman’ is Cassie De Colling’s Dream Project

The film follows Olympic athlete Spencer O’Brien as she reconnects with her First Nations heritage

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is taking place this week at the Banff Centre. With dozens of amazing films screening, there’s a lot to see, and thankfully the event has put all 76 films online to watch from the comfort of your home.

One film that you’ll want to catch in person is Precious Leader Woman, a new documentary from Cassie De Colling. This 2021 official film festival selection runs 46 minutes and screens on Nov. 5 as part of the “Reaching New Heights” showcase.

De Colling, who calls this her “dream project” will talk about the film at the event. Following the festival debut, Precious Leader Women will also air on ESPN, TSN and Telus Originals.

Precious Leader Woman is just the latest example of compelling, carefully researched and honest storytelling from De Colling, a bright young Australian-born director who now lives in Vancouver. The film follows Olympic athlete Spencer O’Brien as she reconnects with her First Nations heritage and greets her next challenge of backcountry snowboarding with grit, heart and soul.

De Collings’ own interest in snowboarding began when she created films for ski resorts, and O’Brien was always on her radar as a fierce and trail-blazing star of the sport. The film embraces themes that drive De Collings’ filmmaking: female empowerment, cultural identity and adrenaline sports.
