Towering Serac in Himalaya Stops Climbers

Watch three climbers attempt to the stunning Thalay Sagar

Thalay Sagar

Keith Ball, Mike Pescod and Guy Buckingham experience demanding conditions and testing mixed climbing in the Garhwal Himalaya. After climbing high on Thalay Sagar, they are stopped by a towering serac. Watch their attempt below.

Thalay Sagar is the second highest peak on the south side of the Gangotri Glacier after Kedarnath but it is more famous thanks to its dramatic peak, being steep on all sides, and for still being a famed prize for mountaineers.

Foreign climbers were not allowed on Thalay Sagar until the 1970s. It was first climbed in June 1979 by an Anglo-American team. Several routes now climb to the summit, including the Australian Route opened by Andrew Lindblade and Athol Whimp, which involves 1,400 metres at VII 5.9 WI5. Their climb was awarded a Piolet d’Or in 1999. In July 2012, the first all-female team saw Tusi Das, 28, summit.
