Trying to Free a 1,000-metre Big Wall

Bronwyn Hodgins and Hayden Jamieson attempt to free a huge route in Chile that was first climbed in 2016

Bronwyn Hodgins and Hayden Jamieson, along with teammates Danford Jooste, Tyler Karow, and Jaron Pham head to Cochamó, Chile, with their eyes on a big wall objective that would lead them up an imposing 1,000-metre line that had yet to see a free ascent.

The route the team attempted is called Picaflor, which was first climbed in 2016 by Martin Håskjold Larsen, Clare Mains, Barry Smith, Fernando Virot, and Tom Ireson. Read their trip report in the American Alpine Journal here.

“Ultimately we managed to free every pitch but one, including several 5.13 pitches (mostly heinous slabs) and a surprisingly steep 12d and 13a at the very top of the cliff,” said Hodgins. “Hayden also came impressively close to managing the crux boulder and suspects the pitch to be 13d/14a slab.”
