Watch Skiers Descend 1,600-metre Ski Line in Canada

Mount Hector is one of the most popular alpine tours in Banff National Park. It requires knowledge of glaciers and big avalanche hazards

The Icefields Parkway has a lot of skiable terrain, but few areas are as popular as Mount Hector, so don’t be surprised if you are joined by several other groups. The snowpack is deep in late winter and it’s best attempted when snow stability is good.

The descent is usually down the same way you went up, but beware of sags and crevasses as skiers have died falling in. The complete run is 1,600 metres.  “I’ve spent years looking at the winter weather in Banff National Park,” said Danny Bryson.

“Two things always stood out, it’s freezing cold and it snows a lot. So when the temperature hit the upper 20’s after a snow storm I decided it was time. Unfortunately the winds had made short work of the new snow but the temperatures were agreeable to someone from my Latitude. With only three days to see as much of Banff and the surrounding area as we could. We tried to make the most of our time, starting with some window shopping from a majestic perch on Mount Hector.”
