Two Canadians on to Semi-Finals at Boulder World Cup

The second Boulder World Cup of 2024 is currently underway in Salt Lake City, Utah. Earlier today, the men’s and women’s qualification rounds were held. Canadians Oscar Baudrand and Maddie Richardson will be moving through to this weekend’s semi-finals, as each placed within the top 20 in their gender categories. Saturday will feature the men’s semi-final and final, with the women’s semi-final and final taking place on Sunday.

Baudrand and Richardson will face some stiff competition in the semi-finals. In women’s, top-ranked boulderers Natalia Grossman, Oriane Bertone, Brooke Raboutou, Oceania Mackenzie, and Jessica Pilz are all competing in the semis. Team USA did well in the women’s qualification round with Grossman, Raboutou, Kyra Condie, Annie Sanders, and Kylie Cullen all moving through to the semi-finals. Richardson placed 19th, just making the semi-final cutoff. It’s her fourth time making the semi-finals at a World Cup. In Keqiao last month, Richardson placed 7th overall. Alannah Yip and Evangelina Briggs – two other Canadian women competing in Salt Lake – placed 37th and 40th respectively in the qualification round.

In men’s, top-ranked boulderers Sorato Anraku, Toby Roberts, Yoshiyuki Ogata, and Tomoa and Meichi Narasaki will all be competing in the semi-finals. Team USA didn’t have as good of a showing in the men’s qualification round with only Colin Duffy and Benjamin Hanna moving through to the finals. Seven other Team USA athletes placed outside the top 20.

Baudrand placed 15th, his first time ever qualifying for a Boulder World Cup semi-final. His Canadian teammate Guy McNamee placed 31st, missing out on the semis. Interestingly, three-time V17 ascensionist Simon Lorenzi placed 37th in the qualifying round, highlighting the fact that outdoor and comp bouldering are very different games.
