Watch Epic Crevasse Rescue in Chamonix by Top Climber

The rescue took place four years ago, but the video was just released

Top climber Jeff Mercier is a search and rescue specialist, who’s made first ascents in Canada, and a few years ago he rescued two skiers after a crevasse fall. The skiers were off-piste in the Vallee Blanche in the Mont Blanc area.

The Vallee Blanche is one of the most popular off-piste routes in the world. It has a 2,500-metre descent over 20 kilometres along the Mer de Glace glacier. There are many deep crevasses along the ski route.

One skier fell 20 metres into the crevasse and his partner tied to save him but also fell in. They had no communication devices but a hostel phoned in a rescue after they were overdue. The rescue team didn’t know where to look but fortunately found them. Watch below.
