This New Vancouver Island Bouldering Gym Looks Awesome

Owner Devin Card gives us the lowdown on Nanaimo's new climbing hub called RavenWood Boulders

Vancouver Island has a big climbing scene, with a number of gyms, dozens of quality crags and some big mountains. RavenWood Boulders is the newest bouldering gym in B.C., and it’s located in beautiful Nanaimo.

“RavenWood Boulders was just a concept three years ago when Elizabeth Mathers, Collin Gittens and myself started visualizing a new addition to the rapidly growing Nanaimo climbing scene,” said Devin Card.

“Very quickly there ideas interested like minded individuals and they brought on board several other long term friends and fellow climbing addicts: Rick and Coreen Huggins, Matt Barker and Dan Yangmin.”

This group of climbers, passionate about the sport and motivated to share it with the Nanaimo community, worked on a plan to create their vision of a new modern facility that embraced west coast vibes with a fun inclusive indoor energy.

The brand new 4,700 square foot building houses 3,000 linear square feet of climbing. “It is a well lit, beautiful space that has a weight training area, mezzanine, casual chill area, foosball table and campus boards,” said Card. “We welcome all experience levels and all ages six and up.”

About the head routesetter, Card said, “It’s Tristan Ploughman, an IFSC certified commercial setter, who has 15 years of experience and brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion to the gym.”

There are a number of other climbing gyms on Vancouver Island, including Wip, Romper Room, The Boulders, On The Rocks, BoulderHouse and more. RavenWood Boulders opened at the end of November, for hours and rates visit here.
