Antarctic Skier Says “I Nearly Died Today”

A record-holding American adventurer fell into a crevasse while skiing to the south pole

American Colin O’Brady said “I almost died today” after falling into a crevasse in Antarctica. He was six kilometres into an expedition from Hercules Inlet to the south pole.

O’Brady was hoping to complete the 1,130-kilometre distance faster than Christian Eide’s time in 2011. Eide made the solo ski traverse in only 24 days. Another skier, Vincent Colliard, is also hoping to beat Eide’s record this year.

O’Brady shared a voice message about the crevasse fall on Instagram, saying that it looked like the crevasse “fell forever.” Shortly after he exited the crevasse, two people from the Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions group at the Union Glacier camp arrived and rappelled 30 metres to rescue O’Brady’s ski pole and ski.

In 2018, O’Brady crossed Antarctica in 54 days in subzero temperatures and wind storms. He became the first person to cross Antarctica alone, unaided without support or supply drops.
