Avalanche Destroys New York Ski Lodge

Warm weather on Christmas Day sent tons of snow into a building, luckily nobody was injured

On Christmas morning, an avalanche has damaged a building at the Belleayre Mountain Ski Center in Ulster County, New York. Officials with the resort said a snow slide happened Friday morning and was a caused by heavy rainfall, high amounts of snow on the ground, and warm temperatures.

The resort posted an update on its website saying “This morning, supersaturated snow from the Yahoo trail let loose and slid into the Overlook Lodge.”

At lease four feet of snow broke through windows and doors, causing damage to the interior. Nobody was injured and the resort noted nothing like it had ever happened.

Shortly after the avalanhce, the resort updated their members with the following: Dear Belleayre Friends and Family, After a tremendous amount of rain and high winds, which has severely impacted our ability to operate in the current environment, The Christmas storm has dumped over 6.5 inches of rain on Belleayre. This morning, supersaturated snow from the Yahoo trail let loose and slid into the Overlook Lodge. The lodge sustained significant damage, with windows and doors broken. No injuries have been reported.
