Climber Loses Leg After Massive Boulder Falls on Him

Adrien Costa was climbing up the north ridge of Mount Conness in Mono Country, California, when a large 2,000-kilogram boulder fell onto him and pinned his leg.

Two hikers nearby saw the accident and called in a rescue. A National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter that was close by on fire assignment managed to reach his through thick smoke.

“When Adrien arrived at the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, he was in critical condition, but thanks to the hospital’s medical staff, and the quick thinking of the hikers who first reported his location, his life was saved,” reads the fundraising page here.

“Tragically, they had no choice but to amputate his right leg above the knee.”

Costa was first American to win Tour de Bretagne, a French stage race, during his first year of going pro. He spent his time not racing out skiing, climbing and hiking.

There has been over $100,000 raised for the 20-year-old, who is currently recovering in hospital.
