Pro Snowboarder’s Account After Recent Deadly Avalanche

Jeremy Jones talked about how his son was one of the first rescuers on scene after an inbounds avalanche last week at a California ski resort

Pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones has shared his first-hand account of a recent avalanche at Palisades Tahoe ski hill which resulted in the death of 66-year-old Kenneth Kidd. The avalanche took place below the famous KT22 chair in the GS Gully zone.

Another skier was also buried in the avalanche, but he was found and rescued. Jones, a regular at Palisades Tahoe and one of the world’s most accomplished backcountry snowboarders, said that his 15-year-old son, Cass, was one of the first people to assist in the search for buried skiers.

“In an instant we went from the highest of highs to lowest of lows,” Jones wrote on his Instagram page, noting that Cass told him on the phone that he was helping an injured skier. “Incredibly sobering that our first-run tracks were buried by a couple feet of avi debris. My heart bleeds for the friends and family of the deceased. Gratitude to the community effort on the rescue.”

Over the past 10 years, six skiers and snowboarders have died in inbounds avalanches at ski resorts. Meanwhile, well over 200 have died in backcountry avalanches during that same time. For more statistics on avalanche deaths in the US visit the Colorado Avalanche Information Center here.
