Two New Adventurous Cold Speed Records

Good conditions have led to FKTs set for the Cuillin Ridge Traverse and a glacier traverse in Antarctica

The year has started with two new speed records or fastest known times (FKT) of a famous ridge traverse in the U.K. and of a path to the South Pole. Matt Pavitt has set the new FKT for a winter traverse of the Cuillin Ridge in 4 hours 35 mins 17 seconds, which is faster than Uisdean Hawthorn’s time of 4:57:07 back in 2018 – which you can watch a film about here.

“I’m being very open and honest here as at no point do I want to piss people off or have people call it out as not being wintery enough,” Pavitt said. “I had crampons on from start to end… it was blue bird and had been blue bird for a few days up here, there was lots of ice around, verglace in cracks and over rocks, surface hoar all the way…”

And in Antarctica, Vincent Colliard from France has set the new FKT for travelling from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole. Over 22 days, he travelled 1,130 kilometres, which is faster than the previous record set by Christian Eide back in 2011 of 24 days.
