Yannick Flohé Climbs His First 5.15a

Lazarus 5.15a is recent hard sport climbing addition to Frankenjura

On April 18, German climber Yannick Flohé climbed Lazarus 5.15a (9a+) at the Schiefer Tod crag in Frankenjura. The route is his hardest sport send to date. Established by Moritz Welt in 2022, Alex Megos picked up the second ascent and Flohé’s ascent is likely the third. Typical of hard Frankenjura routes, Lazarus moves through wildly overhanging limestone covered in small pockets, crimps, and underclings.

While Lazarus is Flohé’s first 5.15a, he’s climbed several 5.14d routes in the past, including Geocache in Frankenjura, Wild Publico in Margalef, and Capricorn in Leonidio. Perhaps better known for his bouldering, Flohé has topped many hard classics in Switzerland in France. In 2023, he sent Return of the Dreamtime V16, Ephyra V16, La Force Tranquille V15, and From Dirt Grows the Flowers V15.

2022 was also a very solid year for Flohé. He started the year with a repeat of the famous Off the Wagon Sit V16. According to his 8a.nu page, he also climbed two V15s and 11 V14s throughout the year. In November 2022, he sent four 5.14c’s in a little over a week while on a trip to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky.

Also an accomplished comp climber, Flohé won gold in Boulder at the Brixen World Cup and bronze in Lead at the Koper World Cup 2022. In 2021, he won gold in Combined at the World Championships in Moscow. He is expected to compete in the Olympic Qualifier Series this spring, hoping to earn a chance to compete for Germany at the Paris Olympics this summer.
