First Ascents of Snowy Himalayan Peaks

Climbers have been busy in the Himalayas this fall as two new mountains have been climbed.

Mick Fowler and Paul Ramsden made the first ascent of Gave Ding 6,4000 metres in Nepal’s Himalaya. Planet Mountain reported the British climbers reached the summit of the remote mountain on Thurs. Oct. 22. The team climbed the north face and descended the west ridge over six days.

Fowler relied on Google Earth to explore the faces on Gave Ding and determined the north face was larger than others in the area. Read a blog written by Fowler before the trip here.

A Russian team comprised of Aleksander Gukov, Valeriy Shamalo, Ivan Dozhdev and Ruslan Kirichenko made the first ascent of Thulagi Chuli 7,059 metres, also in the Nepalese Himalaya. Their new route is called Happy Birthday M4 AI4 5.10 and clims the 1,850-metre west face.

On another note, Nepal elected its first female president today, Bidhya Devi Bhandari. For more, visit here.
