New Adam Ondra 5.15a Gets First Repeat

Stefano Ghisolfi sends the hard route in Arco, Italy in frigid temps

On December 13, Italian Stefano Ghisolfi, 29, made the second ascent of Bombardino 5.15a (9a+) in Arco, Italy. The line was bolted by Alfredo Webber in January 2022 and then first ascended by Adam Ondra the following month. Ondra assigned the route a grade of 5.15a/b. The climb shares an opening 5.14a section with Bomba, an unrepeated 5.15b also first ascended by Ondra around the same time.

Ondra took four days to clean and send Bombardino, which features an awkward and tricky crux. Ghisolfi found easier sequences for the climb, suggesting that the route is solidly 5.15a with the new beta. He managed to send the route in freezing conditions, as icicles hung off the wall around him.

Ghisolfi is one of the world’s top sport climbers. He has climbed three 5.15c’s: Perfecto Mundo in Margalef, Change in Flatanger, and Bibliographie in Céüse. Originally graded 5.15d (9c) by Alex Megos, Ghisolfi downgraded Bibliographie to 5.15c. In 2022, he repeated Adam Ondra’s Move Hard 5.15b, and put up two 5.15b’s of his own in Italy, The Lonely Mountain and L’arenauta.
