After 30 Years The Climbing Wall Closed

A short film documenting the final weeks of The Climbing Wall in the US before it closed for good

In May of 2022, after 30 years of operation in Pittsburgh, The Climbing Wall closed its doors for good. Reese Hays was there to document much of this final month with many of the people who helped make it a hub for local climbers.

After it closed and the new Ascend Point Breeze took its place, Hays felt the need to step away from the climbing community and focus on other pursuits. “This documentary was shelved and the thought of looking at the hours upon hours of footage and interviews I collected seemed too painful and sad for me to go through,” Hays said.

“But it’s been almost two years and now I can look back at this time in my life and remember all the beautiful memories that were made there. I miss these people and this place and am happy to have this movie to remind me of how wonderful and special they all are.” Watch Hays’s short film on The Climbing Wall below.
