Climbers Hang “Stop the Genocide” Banner off Yosemite’s El Capitan

Climbers For Palestine plan to leave the banner up for 24 hours and will be with it the whole time

A group of climbers have hung a banner on the side of El Capitan that reads “Stop the Genocide” and they plan to leave it up until the end of today as part of a 24-hour demonstration.

The climbers started up The Nose on Monday and carried the 25-foot-by-15-foot white banner up with them. The letter are black, green and red, which are meant to represent the colours on the Palestinian flag.

The climbers are part of a group called Climbers With Palestine, which was co-founded by Miranda Oakley and Emily Weinstein. According to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle today titled Yosemite climber-activists hang protest banner from El Capitan: ‘Stop the genocide’, stated that Oakley is a Palestinian American and Weinstein is a Jewish American. “We are using our climbing skills to demand an end to Israel’s genocide in Gaza and the brutal apartheid of its occupation of Palestine,” Oakley is quoted as saying in the article.

Officials with Yosemite National Park were not notified that there would be a banner hung off El Capitan today. Weinstein said that they will be with the banner until it comes down tonight. In March, Climbers With Palestine hung a Palestinian flag in Joshua Tree.
