Alpinists Going for New Himalayan Route

They're hoping to climb a new route up the east face of Nanda Devi East

Three of the world’s most experienced alpinists are currently on an expedition to attempt a new route up the east face of Nanda Devi East (7,434 m) in the Himalaya. Marko Prezelj, Archil Badraishvili and Manu Pellisier took a week to hike into the remote peak.

There is currently only one route on Nanda Devi East, which is the eastern summit of Nanda Devi, which was first climbed in 1939. All subsequent ascents have followed that route. Nanda Devi is the second tallest peak in India.

Prezelj has received three Piolet d’Or awards over the years, while Pellisier and Badriashvili have each received one. Prezelj is considered one of the best alpine climbers of his generation. The three climbers have already climbed a new route up a 6,344-metre peak which had no known previous ascents. They used the two-day climb to acclimatise for Nanda Devi East.

Expeditions like this are like a breath of fresh air after the commercial climbing seasons which sees hundreds of climbers lining up for the world’s highest mountains.
