10 Canadian Bouldering Gyms, Opened and Opening

Canada has dozens of climbing gyms, ranging from small co-ops to big commercial spaces with lead, bouldering and training areas. Below are 10 bouldering spaces from coast to coast that are open now or will be open soon.

BoulderHouse Climbing: A new gym in Victoria and a high-end bouldering space. Recently opened by the talented Jean-Marc de la Plante, who owns Allez Up in Montreal, BoulderHouse is already a popular place for island climbers to session.

The Hive North Shore: The Hive North Shore is a popular bouldering space frequented by Vancouver and Squamish climbers. They host big comps and always have great problems.

Canmore Bouldering Cave: The third small bouldering cave the town of Canmore has had in the past decade. As a co-op, access is 24/7 and when Elevation Place gets too busy, the cave makes a great alternative. And it’s dry-tool friendly.

Bolder Climbing Community: Calgary’s first boulder-only gym will be open sometime in the next 12 months. Run by climbers Josh Muller, Zak McGurk and Criag Doram, Bolder will be a welcomed addition to Canada’s fourth largest city.

Up the Bloc: Up the Bloc will open this fall in Mississauga. The 11,000 square foot gym will be run by Luigi Montilla of Tour de Bloc and Jean-Marc de la Plante of Allez Up. This will surely become one of the Toronto area’s popular bouldering spots.

Cave Rock Climbing: Another new boulder-only facility in Mississauga, north of Up the Bloc. With bouldering caves becoming more popular in the Toronto area, the more gyms the better.

Toprock Climbing: Another boulder-only climbing gym that will open within the next few months in the Toronto area. Toprock is being built in Brampton with Rockwerx Canada, who built the walls for Aspire, Rock Jungle, Climbers Rock and Cliffhanger.

Seven Bays Bouldering: Seven Bays is another top gym from Jean-Marc de la Plante and is about 8,000 kilometres from his Victoria-based BoulderHouse. Seven Bays has become the base for the Nova Scotia bouldering scene and is one of three gyms in Halifax.

Bonus: Gniess Climbing: Kelowna’s top bouldering gym is a state-of-the-art new-age space with great wall angles and training space.
