Basecamp Podcast Discussion with Alpinist Colin Haley

Colin Haley is one of the world’s leading alpinists. Born in Seattle in 1984, he began his climbing life in the Cascade Mountains. Close to home, he made important first ascents in the Canadian Rockies and Alaska. Farther away, Haley has pushed the standards in Patagonia and beyond. Some of his impressive sends outside of Patagonia include the first ascent of The Haley/House on Mount Robson, the first ascent of The Entropy Wall with Jed Brown on Mount Moffit in Alaska, Dracula on Mount Foraker with Bjørn-Eivind Ã…rtun and the first ascent of The Diablo Traverse on Alaska’s Devil’s Thumb with Michael Schaefer.

In Patagonia, Haley has proven himself as one of the top cutting-edge climbers. In the 2015/2016 alone, he soloed Fitz Roy, soloed a new route called El Dragon, made the first solo of Torre Egger, made the first one-day ascent of the Torre Traverse with Alex Honnold (a 2,200-metre 5.11 A1),  and repeated the Wave Effect (a 1,900-metre 5.10) with Honnold. Listen to Haley and Gripped editor Brandon Pullan talk about alpinism and motivation in this 2015 discussion.
