Madeleine Sorkin Climbs 1,000-Foot 5.14 Trad

A new film has been released about her sixth ascent of the imposing alpine rock route

Climbing a route like the Dunn-Westbay Direct wasn’t just a feat of athleticism, but an intimate and creative endeavour for Madeleine Sorkin. Topping out at over 13,000 Feet, there have been only five recorded ascents of the route that finds its way to the summit of Long’s Peak in Colorado’s front range.

The first ascent of Dunn-Westbay Direct was in 2013 by Tommy Caldwell and Joe Mills. The route requires an 80-metre rope, 18 quickdraws and a rack of gear to three inches. In 2017, Sorkin made the fourth ascent of The Honeymoon is Over, a nine-pitch 5.13c up Long’s Peak after Jonathan Siegrist, Joe Mills and Josh Wharton.

For Sorkin to become the sixth, she had to dig deep. Follow along on her journey in a short film that turns four pitches, 1,000 feet of climbing, and an immense experience into 7,229 frames of original artwork and a one-of-a-kind animated short film.
