This Reinhold Messner Film Won Banff Fest

For mountaineering buffs, Tod am Nanga Parbat is a must watch and it's free to view on YouTube below

In June 1970 the Messner brothers, Günther and Reinhold reached The Nanga Parbat after an epic climb. On the descent Günther disappeared. Subsequently, a wall of silence built up concerning the circumstances of his death.

This 2004 documentary Tod am Nanga Parbat, which won the grand prize at the Banff Mountain Festival in 2007, shows rare footage and photo shots of the expedition, and expedition members comment on the tragic event. Especially interesting is the testimony of Gerhard Baur, who became the last witness, as he spent the night before the summit attempt together with the Messner brothers in the high camp.

“For the grand prize, we looked at a film that transcends category,” said jury member Julie Tait in 2007. “In giving us fresh insight into a historic event and the cult of hero,Death on Nanga Parbat offers the viewer a depth of experience that underlines the power of the medium. It’s a triumph of substance over style.”

The documentary was updated in 2010 and broadcasted on TV under the same title including a final segment with footage of the recovery of Günther’s remains, that were found in 2005 at the base of the mountain. For a 2024 update on all of this visit here, and watch Tod am Nanga Parbat below.
