The last issue of Gripped featured an article highlighting male climbers in their late 40s and 50s that are still climbing routes at the upper end of the difficulty scale. It now seems that women are also redefining what is possible as they get older. At 47 years-of-age, Robyn Erbesfield-Raboutou last week onsighted Octupus 7c+ (5.13a) in Gorges du Tarn and climbed three 8a (5.13b) routes on her second go. Erbesfield-Raboutou contributes her success to a strong work ethic. She says, “There is no secret to training other than hard work.” Â From 1989 thought to 1995, Erbesfield-Raboutou was the world’s best female competition climber. Gripped readers can look forward to an upcoming article showcasing the increasing number of women climbing hard into their 40s.
