Two New Alpine Ice Routes on Vancouver Island
The climbs ascend a remote peak with a number of near-perfect névé lines

Five climbers recently visited a remote area of Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island and climbed two new winter alpine lines on Mount Albert Edward. The peak is the sixth highest on the island at 2,093 metres.
Max Fisher and Gabriel Andres Mancilla Jipoulou established a new roughly 300-metre line up the northeast face they’re calling Riquezas en la vista, which is graded WI3+/4. “It was fun,” said Fisher.
The other new route was added to the peak by Kris Mutafov, Ryan Van Horne and Liam Gilchrist up the northwest face to the summit. They found solid névé broken up with a few short ice steps for 280 metres of AI3. It was noted to be one of the Island’s remaining winter problems by Philip Stone in his guidebook Island Alpine Select. For more Island alpine news visit here.
