Summer Avalanche on Mount Athabasca, Nobody Involved
Avalanches can occur on Canada's mountains all year. Climbers and skiers should carry a beacon, shovel and probe when in avalanche areas during summer
A large avalanche occurred down Mount Athabasca’s Ramp Route on June 25. The alpine snow route is one of the most popular on the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper.
This can be seen via the Columbia Icefields Center Webcam here. Parks Canada reported that from field reports it appears to be a wind slab avalanche possibly from the recent snowfall on June 23.
“This is a good reminder that avalanches can occur at anytime of the year in the mountains and bringing avalanche rescue equipment (transceiver, shovel and probe) should be standard practice for mountaineering and alpine climbing when traveling in avalanche terrain.”
