The ‘Oscars’ of Squamish Climbing Are Back!

After a four-year hiatus, the Golden Scrub Brush Awards make their return on September 15

The Golden Scrub Brush Awards are the Squamish climbing community’s opportunity to say thank you to all the developers who work tirelessly to open new sport routes, trad routes, multi-pitches, and boulder problems. The last Golden Scrub Brush event was held back in 2019, and so many amazing routes and boulders have been developed in the meantime.

A whole guidebook’s worth of sport and trad cragging has gone up over the past few years. The Hideout, Echo Beach, The Hermitage, Brohm Dome, Lost Pillar, Shannon Springs, Zen Garden, Interstellar Wall, The Soul Asylum, the Browning Bluffs additions, Anvil Island – the list goes on. Epic multi-pitches have been established: Born Again, Sea of Tranquility, Balance, Spirit of Squamish, Earthshine, and Life in Space, among many others. Some five-star boulder problems have been unearthed – The Megg, Seven, On Again Off Again, Ivory Tower, Jelly Cat, First Come First Served, and Majestic, just to name just a few.

On Friday September 15, the Squamish Access Society (SAS) is holding the 2023 Golden Scrub Brush Awards. With award categories like best new sport crag, best new multi-pitch, best new bouldering area, and best rescrub, attending the event is a great way to celebrate your favourite Squamish scrubbers.

The night doesn’t just include the awards. There will also be an update from SAS, community presentations, games, prizes, and to top it all off, a ‘Disco Dirtbag’ dance party that will run into the wee hours of the night featuring DJ Good Eric, Matt Who!?, and Nathan Hall.

The event starts at 7:30pm at One and a Half Ave in downtown Squamish. Tickets for the event are $15 for SAS members and $30 for non-members, with all proceeds going to SAS. You can buy your tickets for the event here. You can sign up to become a SAS member here.
